Fall Homeschool Activities for Kids: Hands-On Ideas for Autumn

Fall might be one of the easiest seasons to bring into your homeschool. There are leaves changing right outside the window, pumpkins everywhere, animals getting ready for winter, cooler days that are perfect for nature walks, and about a million reasons to pull out the art supplies.
And you don't need to turn every one of those things into a formal lesson.
Some of our favorite fall homeschool activities are simply a great book paired with something to make, build, investigate, or explore. We might collect leaves and bring them home for an art project, investigate what's actually happening when they change color, spend a week learning about bats and other nocturnal animals, or head outside to see what we can find.
The ideas here are geared toward elementary-age kids, roughly ages 7–11. At this age, kids are ready to go beyond simple seasonal crafts and dig a little deeper—experimenting with real science, identifying what they find outside, learning new art techniques, building and creating, and asking plenty of questions along the way.

I've gathered some of my favorite hands-on fall activities for kids, with ideas for science, nature study, art, books, and seasonal themes. Pick a few that sound fun, follow your kids' curiosity, and leave the rest for another fall.

Changing leaves are probably the most obvious sign of fall—and they're also one of the easiest places to start exploring the season with elementary-age kids.
Instead of stopping at a leaf rubbing or a quick craft, take a closer look at the trees themselves, investigate what's happening inside the leaves, and then use those beautiful fall shapes and colors for art.
Start outside. Head to the woods, a local park, or simply your own backyard and see how many signs of fall you can spot.
Look for leaves in different stages of changing color, acorns and other seeds, interesting bark, fungi, animal tracks, feathers, nests, and other clues that the season is changing. A fall nature scavenger hunt gives kids something specific to search for while still leaving plenty of room for the inevitable, "Wait—come look at THIS!"
Bring home a few fallen leaves that catch your eye. Compare their shapes, edges, veins, and colors, and see if you can identify which trees they came from. A local tree guide or field guide is a great addition for this age group.
Those leaves can also become a surprisingly cool fall science experiment.
Green leaves don't contain just one pigment. Chlorophyll produces the green we see during the growing season, but leaves also contain other pigments, including carotenoids that appear yellow and orange. During fall, chlorophyll production slows and the chlorophyll already in the leaves begins to break down, allowing some of those other colors to become much easier to see.
Leaf chromatography lets kids separate some of those pigments right on a strip of paper.
Even better, don't test just one leaf. Collect leaves from the same type of tree in several stages of color change—for example, one that's still dark green, one that's yellow, and one that's orange or red—and compare the results.
You'll need:
How to do leaf chromatography:
1. Prepare your leaves. Keep each color or stage separate. Tear or cut the leaves into very small pieces and place each group in its own jar.
2. Add rubbing alcohol. Pour in just enough to cover the chopped leaves.
3. Mash the leaves. Use the back of a spoon or another blunt tool to thoroughly mash the leaves into the alcohol. You're trying to help release as much pigment as possible.
4. Give them a warm-water bath. Cover the jars with plastic wrap and place them inside a larger bowl or dish. Pour hot water into the larger bowl around the jars—not into the leaf mixture.
Let the jars sit for about one hour, occasionally giving them a gentle swirl. Replace the hot water if it cools. You should see the alcohol becoming strongly colored as pigments are extracted from the leaves.
Because rubbing alcohol is flammable, an adult should handle it and keep it well away from flames and heat sources. Never heat the alcohol directly.
5. Prepare your chromatography strips. Cut a coffee filter into long strips, roughly an inch wide. You'll need one for each jar.
Place a strip into each jar so the bottom touches the liquid while most of the paper remains above it. You can tape the top to a pencil laid across the jar to hold it in place.
6. Let the pigments travel. Leave the strips alone and watch.
As the liquid travels upward through the coffee filter, it carries pigments from the leaves with it. Different pigments move through the paper differently, which can cause them to separate into bands of green, yellow, yellow-green, orange, or other shades.
Give the strips at least an hour, then remove them and lay them side by side.
Now take a look at the strips from your green, yellow, orange, or red leaves.
Which colors can you find on each strip? Does your green leaf contain any yellow? Which pigments seem strongest in each leaf? How did the results change as the leaves changed color?
One interesting wrinkle: red and purple fall colors don't behave exactly like the yellows and oranges. Those colors often come from pigments called anthocyanins, which can be produced in leaves during fall.
So an unexpected result isn't necessarily a failed experiment. It's another question to investigate.
And that's exactly the kind of fall science I love for elementary kids!
Once you've spent some time looking closely at real leaves, bring those shapes and textures into your art.
Roll out air-dry clay and press a real leaf or leaf texture plate firmly into the surface. Look at all those little veins and branching patterns that appear in the clay.
Cut around the leaf shape, gently lift or shape the edges to give it some dimension, and let the clay dry completely. Once dry, paint your leaves using the colors you've been noticing outside—or go completely off-script. There is no rule saying your maple leaf can't be turquoise.
These make beautiful fall decorations, but they're also a great way to get kids looking closely at details they might otherwise miss.
Watercolor is especially fun for fall art because the colors can flow and blend instead of staying neatly inside their own little sections.
Try creating leaf shapes on watercolor or diffusing paper and experimenting with reds, oranges, yellows, and greens. Add colors beside one another and watch what happens as they spread and meet.
For older elementary kids, turn some of the control over to them. What happens when the paper is wetter? What if you add one color before another? Which colors blend beautifully? Which combinations quickly turn muddy?
It's still a simple fall art project, but experimenting with the medium makes it much more interesting for the 7–11 crowd than simply filling in a leaf shape.

Kids explore woodland habitats, plants, animals, adaptations, food chains, nature observation, art, and more—including memorable activities like dissecting an owl pellet and building a woodland diorama.
It's essentially the "we want to keep going, but Mom does not want to hunt down 37 supplies" version of a woodland study.
Pumpkins are everywhere in fall, but there's a lot more you can do with them than paint a face on one.
Before you carve your jack-o'-lantern, turn a few pumpkins into a hands-on investigation. Then, when you're finished being scientific, make one erupt.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara is one of those picture books that practically begs you to stop reading and try it yourself.
In the story, Mr. Tiffin's class investigates three different pumpkins and tries to figure out which one contains the most seeds. Kids make predictions, open the pumpkins, and find different ways to count the enormous piles of seeds.
Grab two or three pumpkins of noticeably different sizes and conduct your own investigation.
Before you cut them open:
Don't worry about being right. The predictions are half the fun!
Now cut open the pumpkins, scoop out the insides, and separate the seeds from the pulp. Give each pumpkin its own pile so you don't mix up your data.
Then comes the big question:
How are you going to count all those seeds?
Try grouping them by 2s, 5s, 10s, or even larger groups. Older kids can decide which method they think will be fastest and compare counting strategies.
Once you've counted everything, record the total for each pumpkin and go back to your original predictions.
Was the biggest pumpkin the one with the most seeds? Was circumference a good predictor? What about weight? Did the number of ribs seem to have any relationship to the number of seeds?
If you're doing this with siblings or a small homeschool group, let different kids take responsibility for different pumpkins and compare everyone's results at the end.
And don't toss those pumpkins yet.
We're not finished with them!
We've done this one at home, and it is exactly as delightfully messy as it sounds.
Carve a jack-o'-lantern with a nice open mouth, then use a baking soda and vinegar reaction to send colorful, glittery foam bubbling right out of its face.
You'll need:
Place your jack-o'-lantern on a large tray—or take the whole experiment outside and save yourself the cleanup.
Add a generous scoop of baking soda to the bottom of the pumpkin. Add a squirt of dish soap, several drops of food coloring, and some glitter.
Pour in the vinegar and stand back.
The vinegar and baking soda react to produce carbon dioxide gas. The dish soap traps that gas in bubbles, creating a foamy eruption that eventually comes spilling out through the jack-o'-lantern's mouth.
Once the first eruption settles down, don't stop there! Add more ingredients and experiment.
What happens if you use more baking soda? More vinegar? More dish soap? Can you make the foam come out of the eyes as well as the mouth?
This is one of those fall science activities where knowing what's happening doesn't make it any less fun. If anything, understanding the reaction gives kids more ideas for what they want to try next.
And yes, glitter is scientifically optional ... I recommend it anyway. 😇
As the days get shorter, fall is a great time to learn about the animals that become active when we're getting ready for bed.
Bats, owls, opossums, moths, raccoons, and other nocturnal animals have fascinating adaptations that help them find food, navigate, hunt, and stay safe in low light or complete darkness.
For elementary-age kids, that gives us much more to explore than simply memorizing which animals are awake at night.
Instead of making a flat paper bat, pull out the air-dry clay and sculpt one.
Before you start, look closely at photographs or illustrations of real bats. Pay particular attention to their wings. A bat wing isn't like a bird's wing—the membrane stretches over elongated finger bones.
Have kids form the bat's body, head, ears, and wings, using their fingers or simple clay tools to add texture and details. Once the sculpture dries, paint it.
The finished bats will all look a little different, which is part of the fun. The goal isn't to create a perfect model; it's to look closely enough at a real animal that those observations start showing up in what you make.
If you have a kid who enjoys figuring out how things work—or one who is delighted by anything slightly gross—owl pellet dissection is hard to beat.
Owls often swallow prey such as rodents whole. They digest the parts they can use, but fur, feathers, teeth, and bones can't be digested in the same way. Those materials are compacted into a pellet that the owl later coughs up.
With a sterilized owl pellet intended for educational use, kids can carefully tease the pellet apart and see what's inside.
Use toothpicks, tweezers, or similar tools to separate the fur from the bones. Sort the bones as you find them and compare them with a bone identification chart.
Look for skulls, jaws, vertebrae, ribs, leg bones, and other recognizable pieces.
Then use the evidence to answer the really interesting question:
What did this owl eat?
You can even try reconstructing a prey skeleton from the bones you uncover.
We include an owl pellet dissection in our Explore the Woodlands Unit Study, and it's exactly the kind of hands-on activity I love for older elementary kids: there's something real to investigate, and you don't know exactly what you're going to discover until you open it.
What changes when you can't rely as heavily on your eyes?
Nocturnal animals have all kinds of adaptations that help them move, find food, avoid predators, and communicate after dark. Try a simple Senses of the Night investigation to find out how differently you use your own senses when the lights go down.
Our Nocturnal Animals unit explores four of them— sight, hearing, smell, and touch/movement—and asks kids to think about how each could help an animal find its way and stay safe at night.
Wait until evening or choose a room you can make fairly dark. Then investigate one sense at a time.
Sight: Spend a few minutes in the dim room without turning on a light. At first, notice what you can and can't see. Wait several minutes and look again. Has anything changed? Which objects are easiest to see? Are shapes easier to distinguish than colors?
Hearing: Close your eyes and sit completely still for one minute. Make a mental list of every sound you hear. How many of those sounds had you noticed before you deliberately stopped relying on your vision?
Smell: Have someone place several strongly scented but safe household items in small cups—things like coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, or orange peel. Close your eyes and see how many you can identify using smell alone. Which scents are easiest to recognize?
Touch and movement: Put several familiar objects inside a bag or pillowcase. Without looking, reach inside and try to identify each one using only your hands. What information are you using—shape, texture, size, weight, temperature?
Now bring everything together.
If you had to spend tonight outside without using your eyes, which sense would you most want to rely on? Why?
That's also the final idea behind our Senses of the Night Lab: after experimenting with each sense, kids decide which one they'd most want to be strongest if they were a nighttime animal.
For older kids, take the investigation one step farther. Choose a real nocturnal animal and find out:
Which senses does this animal rely on most, and what physical adaptations make those senses especially useful at night?

Not every fall activity needs supplies—or even a plan.
Some of the best fall homeschool activities start by heading outside and paying closer attention to what's changing around you.
For ages 7–11, I like giving kids something to investigate rather than simply sending them out with a checklist. Look for evidence. Make predictions. Bring home questions.
Once you start looking for seeds in fall, you'll see them everywhere.
Look for as many different kinds as you can find: maple "helicopters," acorns, burrs, milkweed seeds, berries, pinecones, or whatever grows where you live.
Then look closely at what you've collected.
How do you think each seed gets away from its parent plant?
Try sorting your finds by their likely method of dispersal:
Wind
Animals
Hitchhiking
Gravity
Launching or bursting
Now look for evidence supporting your guesses.
A maple seed has a wing that helps it spin through the air. A burr has hooks that grab onto fur or clothing. A fleshy fruit might tempt an animal to eat it and carry the seeds somewhere else.
For older elementary kids, don't stop at sorting. Test some of your ideas.
Drop several winged seeds from the same height and time how long each takes to reach the ground.
Put burrs against different fabrics and see which surfaces they cling to most easily.
Place several lightweight seeds in front of a fan at the same distance and compare how far they travel.
Which structures seem especially well suited to the job they're doing?
Suddenly that pile of things you picked up on your walk starts looking much more interesting.
You don't have to actually see a wild animal to discover that it was there.
Look around muddy paths, creek edges, gardens, woods, or your own backyard for tracks, scat, chewed nuts, feathers, fur, nests, holes, scratch marks, or partially eaten plants.
Take photographs of what you find rather than collecting it.
Back home, use a field guide or reliable identification resource and see if you can build a case.
What animal do you think was here?
More importantly:
What evidence supports your answer?
Maybe you won't be able to identify every mystery with certainty. That's okay. Real nature observation doesn't always end with a tidy answer.
Sometimes the best result is another reason to go back outside tomorrow.
Have each child choose one tree somewhere you can revisit easily—your backyard, a favorite park, or somewhere along your usual walking route.
Identify the species if you can, then take a photograph or make a sketch.
Come back to the same tree once a week for several weeks.
Pay attention to what's changing.
Are the leaves a different color? How many have fallen? Are there seeds or fruit? What's accumulating underneath the tree? Are insects or birds visiting it? Can you find nests, fungi, holes, or other evidence of animals?
Take another photograph from approximately the same spot each week.
By late fall, you'll have your own visual record of the season changing—and chances are your kids will notice far more about that one tree than they would have if they'd simply walked past it all season.
This is the part where I remind you that this is a collection of ideas, not your new fall homeschool checklist.
You don't need to conduct chromatography, count 600 pumpkin seeds, dissect an owl pellet, sculpt a bat, adopt a tree, and become an expert on seed dispersal before Thanksgiving.
Choose the things that make your kids say, "Can we do that?"
Maybe you spend an afternoon reading How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? and investigating three pumpkins. Maybe your nature walk turns into a month-long fascination with trees. Maybe your child discovers owl pellets and suddenly needs to know absolutely everything an owl has eaten since the beginning of time.
Follow that.
For me, that's one of the best things about homeschooling in the fall. The season gives us so much to explore that we don't have to manufacture learning opportunities. They're already outside the window.
Grab a good book, pull out a few supplies, head outside, and see where your kids' curiosity takes you.
