Each week is anchored by a different read-aloud that builds on the last. Night Animals opens the unit with a first look at who comes out after dark. Out of Sight, Until Tonight! All About Nocturnal Animals takes a closer, fact-filled look at the animals themselves. The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark follows a little owl named Plop, whose fear of the dark mirrors Pepper's own journey. And The Busy Tree closes the unit with a visit to an old oak tree that's home to more creatures than you'd ever expect. Every book comes with before, during, and after reading questions from Pepper himself, turning story time into real conversation rather than passive listening.
Hands-on projects bring every animal to life. Children will paint and assemble a Paper Plate Opossum, cover a Paper Mache Bat in clay, build a glowing Owl Lantern from a paper bag and make a textured Mosaic Owl. In Week 2, a Raccoon in a Tree Art project has kids shading chalk pastel bark, cutting an oval "hole" into the trunk, and sliding a hand-built raccoon through so its head peeks out — a favorite to hang and display.
