You know summer is coming to an end and fall is on the way when the sunflowers start blooming and showing off their vibrant beauty!
To celebrate the official start of fall, today we're sharing an easy but gorgeous fall art for kids project you can do at home with your little artists.
Supplies:
Watercolor paper
A pencil
Oil pastels or crayons
Watercolor paints
Step 1:
First, draw the outline of your sunflower in pencil. Make a big circle in the upper right corner of your paper. Try making your flower go off the paper a bit by lifting your pencil at the edges of the cornerβlike you were taking a picture of the flower up close and a little bit got cut off.
Inside the big circle of your flower, make a small circle (that's where the seeds on a real sunflower are!), and another circle around that one where the fuzzy little bits are in real life. Fun fact: these are called florets!
Finally, draw a stem coming down and a leaf off to the side.
Step 2:
Next in our sunflower fall art for kids, it's time for oil pastels! (You can also use crayons if you don't have oil pastels handy).
Our oil pastel step is alllll about little lines within a color family. In the middle of the sunflower head and the circle around it of little florets, make short lines in shades of dark brown. For the sunflower's petals, make Vs around the big circle and then different lengths of lines in as many shades of yellow as you have. Do the stem and leaf in shades of green, and the background in blues.
Step 3:
Now it's time to make this fall art for kids really come alive with watercolor! Whether you have a bigger palette like ours our a regular 8-color kids' palette, it's fine. You can make more shades by mixing colors!Β
Start painting your sunflower, filling in the middle of the flower with browns, the petals with yellows, the stem and leaf with greens, and the background with blues. The oil pastel will resist the water, so you can paint right over it and it will still show!
You don't have to stick to yellow for your sunflower. Real sunflowers have varieties that are pink, red, brown, cream ... don't be afraid to make yours extra-special, too!
Once your paint is dry, display your beautiful work of art!
I got this fall art for kids idea from The Kitchen Table Classroom. Thank you so much for sharing your creativity with us!Β
This was the perfect crate for all of my kids! I originally bought it for my 2 year old to play with her but found my 7,9, and 11 year old tagging along for the fun.
